Texas Roses and Vintage Rose Lingerie

One of the benefits of Texas is the long gardening season and the perfect climate for roses. Don't get me wrong, they grew fabulous in Michigan as well, but down here they are just glorious from March until January. This year, exceptional. The size of dinner plates and the bushes sagging from the weight of so many blooms.

I love roses and all flowers, from my back yard, or a gracious birthday bouquet from a friend.

If you too love roses, but they aren't blooming yet where you live, here are just a few pretty nightgowns and even a short duster robe in glorious floral prints for you to enjoy indoors!

Farewell to Austin

Once upon a time there was a man who absolutely worshiped and adored his beautiful wife. Loved her truly, madly, deeply. And she him.

The man was an executive for a major oil company based out of Austin, TX but his job required him to travel extensively. He didn't mind, as he was almost always home on weekends to be with his wife and lovely daughters. When possible, his wife joined him but usually just preferred being home with their girls and their normal schedule.

After 20 years of marriage, the woman suddenly became sick. Bedridden, her teen age daughters cared for her before and after school, neighbors popping in during the day checking on her, and of course her husband trying to restrict his travels.

But, as he did travel, each trip he bought her something fabulous. Always lingerie since she was bedridden. Usually frilly and feminine, but demure at the same time and never the same style. Nothing was too good for his wife. If he was in a small town, he loved little local boutiques. Major cities he often went to upscale stores and purchased from Lord and Taylor, Saks, and Neiman's. He never came home without a special gift for his wife. She was the love of his life, and he wanted her to feel beautiful even restricted to the bed.

Sadly, she passed away in the late 80s. He died most likely from a broken heart just a few years later. Their daughters packed up the house and stored almost everything, unable to part with most of it.

Last year they decided the time was "right" and they knew they had to deal with their parents items, including their mother's lingerie.

If possible and I can corner a family member at an estate sale I try to get provenance for my customers. This time I not only got provenance but a glass of sweet tea when the daughters discovered I had driven from Ft. Worth just for the lingerie and they also shared this amazing love story with me. We also shared tears of course at the great, once in a lifetime devoted love their parents found in each other. The daughters still kept many of her beautiful lingerie, but I bought every item they offered.

Gradually over the last year I have "reluctantly" sold them.. enjoying each item, sadly many still new with tags that she never got to enjoy. Most went to the same wonderful customer, a lady in California that was as touched by the provenance as I was.

Last week my personal favorite sold. I held on to this set as long as I could. Just appreciating the lace. A white vintage set with iridescent ruffles of lace that was absolutely incredible. Ironically, it sold on line, but to a wonderful lady that lived right in my own home town. We met in person and she was thrilled with the set, admitting it was even more beautiful in person. I know the daughters would be pleased it went to such a good home.

And now I'm a wee bit sad. Of all the estates I've been to this one touched me most. I'm down to the very last set. I have truly enjoyed offering her items, and was so grateful her daughters shared the story with me. I am pleased they all went to wonderful homes, and am sure the last set will too.

Vintage Lingerie Makes a Perfect Bridal Shower Gift

What does a vintage selling Mom give her daughter for a bridal shower? Ok. that's pretty obvious! I must admit I did "look" at Allana's registry, but my heart was just not into buying them a place setting of Fiesta,a crock pot or sheets. I wanted something more memorable.

So a vintage chiffon Vanity Fair peignoir set in a pretty ivory color it was. Long to the floor, full, beautiful, lacy and feminine. A wedding night set. Most of the twenty-something girls in attendance had never seen anything like it, and it was a hit with everyone there, most of all the bride; my daughter.

If you are going to a bridal shower ~ think out side the box. Give her something she and the groom will love, and in five years, they will remember it was from you, unlike most other gifts.

Here are just a few suggestions from

Vintage Lingerie The Hard Part is Parting With It

i go to so many estate sales, and fortunately find so many vintage pretties, it's typically "just my job" and i try to seek out only the most beautiful or that really rare, unusual item to offer my customers. Of course, after ten years, i can usually spot a brand a mile away, and also buy the "common" styles and lines, like any vintage Olga. Often styles or designs are repeated by other manufacturers, and typically are alike. But every once in a while i find something unique~ lingerie just so beautiful or striking, they are hard to part with.

Silly. I know. If i can't wear them, just pass them along, right? Sometimes they aren't really my style, other times not my size.

Just the same, i sometimes fall in love with a unique style or different fabric. On those occasions, after taking the photo's of the item, I just leave them on the mannequin so i can "enjoy" them for a while. You probably think I'm totally crazy by now. It just never ceases to amaze me how a tiny concept in a designer's mind, combined with just the perfect fabric and the right accents turns into something beautiful.

A fan of simple designs, I love the color combination of this set. The purple-blue against the white is just stunning... and no lace, no frills, just simple and feminine. Vintage Gilead, with a very contemporary design.

As a complete opposite, we have this beauty. A layer of ultra silky semi sheer nylon, over the nylon, a full, floaty layer of chiffon. An Intime, always a favorite. I love that this is versatile lingerie~ one little nightgown can offer so many different options. It can be worn just as it is, full and flowing. Two tiny little embroidered "button holes" at the side seam allow you to tie it different ways with a satin ribbon sash, and create completely different looks. My personal favorite is under the chiffon in back, tying the bow over the chiffon in front so the back trails.. very Grecian goddess!

The last favorite this month is the most amazing little pink peignoir robe. Made by Godfried, surprisingly its from the same estate as the Intime.. and the complete opposite. Where the Intime is sexy, this little robe is as sweet and innocent as can be. The only thing "sexy" about it is the fact its sheer. Two layers of double pink chiffon.. with a peter pan color ~ very demure. But.. the entire bodice is all embroidered dots. Dotted swiss, but real ones, not the flocked. Very beautiful.I admire the design, the embroidery and the style. Truly fabulous!

These are my "favorite things" this month...the ones that were left on Harriet the Mannequin to admire. these are all listed at http://vintagepretties.rubylane.com. Ready to go to new homes and be admired by a new owner. I've already started new ones for next month.. there's a new pretty on Harriet right now as i type.

"There Really Is An Olga"

Almost every vintage lingerie lover will name an Olga nightgown as one of their favorite gowns. The styling, fabric, design were trend setters, and often copied by other lingerie makers. No one could duplicate an Olga exactly, though many came close. The superior construction of her complete line is a testament to quality, as there are many thirty year old items that still look like new.

And yes.. there really is an Olga. In 1941 Olga Erteszek and her husband immigrated to the United States from Poland, fleeing the Nazi army. In California, she worked in a sweatshop making lingerie; taking a trolley to work.

It was on this trolley that the concept of business was conceived for Olga.. she noticed a woman across from her with her nylon hose rolled to her knees. Olga felt there should be something nicer and more feminine for women to hold their stockings.

With $5.00 and a rented sewing machine, Olga created lace garter belts for women. The garter belts sold immediately to Bullocka-Wilshire, and her dream began. Olga created lingerie items that flattered a woman, while attractive to a man.

As a woman, she knew what "problem areas" most of us had, and created spandex blend fabrics to gently hold and support tummies while holding the bust in place. A true genius! There is an Olga gown to flatter any woman's style or taste, from flannel and demure to lacy and frilly with dramatic full sweep hemlines. During a hospital stay, Olga discovered the need for bust support and created the "Sleeping Pretty" line in 1966 which featured a very softly lined, comfortable bra built into a nightgown.

Olga also created the first line of "seamless" bras and tummy trimming panties. The Olga product line created amazing lingerie, from slips and camisoles to luxurious pajamas. With three daughters, she also had a limited, very exclusive line named for her daughter Christina.

Olga's company grew, to over 2000 employees and 17 designers. As well as a successful line of lingerie, she was also very successful in the business world. She held the woman's record for patents ~ with over 28 of them. Olga was one named by Fortune 500 as of the 100 best companies to work for in the United States, and was one of the first to initiate profit sharing for her employees. She won numerous awards, humanitarian as well as Industry design and fashion as well as California Industrialist of the Year Award for lifetime achievement..

According to her obituary, by 1984 the Olga Company; now public had reached a volume of $67 million. The company was sold that year to Warnaco (warner's). Warnaco is still producing under the Olga name, but has sadly discontinued the nightgowns, only offering bras and panties.

Daughter Christina stayed on as a designer for the line "Olga's Christina" for Warnaco. Christina designs for her own company, "Intimate Health" and sells earth friendly all organic cotton bras and panties to help prevent bacterial infections, as well as the "Brassage" a massaging bra designed to help prevent breast cancer, a cause dear to her, as that is how her mother, Olga died in 1989.

There is an Olga style for everyone, demure brushed flannel, sexy sweeping dramatic, to even innocent baby doll nightgowns, do try a vintage Olga nightgown. The minute you slip it on, you will understand what the fuss is all about.

And of course, here come's the shameless plug, lol.. i was fortunate to obtain some fabulous NWT olga's from the grandaughter of an Olga employee..and still have just a few left!
